Below is more information concerning the quantity, size, and cut of each piece used to build the planter stand for an 8 1/2-inch terracotta pot.
When assembled the top shelf will be six inches above the lower shelf. The legs will be attached to the lower shelf at a thirty-degree angle. I used both a speed square and a combination square to ensure that the legs and shelves were positioned properly.
How do you make a stand for different-sized pots?
If you have a set of pots or containers that are not the same measurements as the 8 1/2-inch terracotta pots I used you can still build this style with a few simple changes. First, you will need to measure the width of the container just below the rim or collar this is where the stand will support the container. The second thing to do is measure the depth of the container from the contact point below the collar to the bottom of the container, the shelves will have to be at least this distance above the floor or first shelf. If you are planning to use larger containers you will need to consider using containers made of resin and/or larger dimensions for the pieces to build the stand due to the added weight.
- 10″ Whiskey barrel planters: great for an aged, antique look.
- 10″ Eclipse Round Planter: perfect for a more contemporary look.
How do you finish a wooden plant stand?
This depends on the look you would like to achieve. You can paint or stain your stand to match your decor. However, if you would like to achieve an aged barn wood look like my tray you can do this easily with tea and vinegar. To age your wood naturally follow these steps:
- Brew a strong glass of black tea, pour it into a mason jar, and seal it for 24 hours.
- Pinch up a few small pieces of 0000 steel wool and seal them in a jar with 8 ounces of white vinegar, make sure they are fully submerged for 24 hours.
- Apply a generous coat of tea to your boards and allow them to dry completely.
- Once dried, apply a coat of vinegar with the steel wool. Work the vinegar and steal wool over the wood to achieve your desired look.
How do you protect your wooden plant stand waterproof or water resistant?
In order to waterproof your tray you will need a few extra supplies. To securely seal and protect your stand you will need to carefully brush a layer of polyurethane over your wood. Make sure to read the directions and choose a sealant that will not yellow your project.
Alternatively, you can seal your project naturally with linseed oil. This doesn’t offer quite the same protection that polyurethane will, but if you just need something to help seal and not necessarily waterproof this is a good option for you.
