Today I’m sharing a simple Christmas craft that you can get the entire family excited about. While this craft has some parts that need a bit of adult supervision, once the pieces are cut, little ones can make this craft their own!

You can make these DIY Wooden Snowmen uniform in size and look, or create various sizes using different portions of the wood. Also mix things up by using different ribbons or fabric for the scarf. You could even use school colors and this would be a great holiday teacher gift!

How do you make wooden snowmen?

These cute wooden snowmen are simple to make. As you can imagine, these are comprised of a few different parts: the body, arms, face, buttons, and scarf. Below you will find detailed step-by-step photos as well as a video, but this project is basically split up into a few simple steps:

  1. Using a table saw, carefully slice the tree branch into three sections of varying widths; this will be the body of the snowman.
  2. Use a sander to flatten the bottom section of the snowman so it sits flat.
  3. Drill matching holes for the head and midsection to connect, then repeat the process for the midsection and base sections. Secure the sections together with the pin.
  4. Drill two holes in the midsection for the branch arms, secure them in place.
  5. Finally, you are ready to add a face and button to your snowman. You can draw these on to create your own look. However, I drilled small holes in the body and used small sections of branch to create the look I wanted. When you have finished the body, add a scarf of your choosing!

What sort of branch do you use to make snowman?

You can use any sort of branch you wish for this project. I used a birch branch because I love the interesting texture it adds. However, you can use any sort of branch you have available. You can even make it a fun, educational family activity by using this cute (and free!) scavenger hunt from the Sharing Scholar!

  • Drill two holes in the midsection for the branch arms, secure them in place.
  • Finally, you are ready to add a face and button to your snowman. Lay the assembled snowman down on itโ€™s back, using a pencil mark the eyes, nose and buttons.
  • Match as closely as possible the twigs to a drill bit the bit should be smaller than the twigs. Now you are ready to drill the holes for the face and buttons. I drilled entirely through for each hole, twig length is not so difficult when the hole is open on the back side.
  • Shave the twigs for a snug fit into each hole, I used a black paint pen for the eyes and buttons, for the nose I used yellow then lightly used red. Then ninched the nose between my fingers and rotated the nose several times back and forth to smudge the colors to get closer to orange. If you have an orange pen please use it.
  • Finally, add a scarf with ribbon or pipecleaners!
